Life after Nauru: help a young family rebuild their lives

After years in limbo, the Australian government sent Ahmed, Amina and their two young daughters to the United States with barely more than the clothes on their backs – just as the pandemic was rearing its head again.

Ahmed and Amina and their two daughters – 2 and 3 – landed in the USA in July. After almost 3 years in Australia and almost as long in Nauru before that, they arrived to a state where they didn’t know anyone and were placed in unsafe and unsanitary housing. Both kids got sick and the family have already had to move twice, now squeezing into a studio apartment.

They are working hard to get their new lives in the USA started. Celebrations for their daughter’s recent third birthday have been put on hold until they have a stable home.

Keeping the rent paid and getting everyone healthy remains a major challenge amid the uncertainty of rising Covid case numbers and in a medical system that routinely fails its own citizens, let alone newly arrived refugees.

The Aussie-run Ads-Up Refugee Network has created this fundraiser to help give this young family the best footing for a new start – contributions will be deposited directly into the family’s account.

Please consider a donation of any amount today – together, it all adds up >>

Social services in the USA are overstretched and under-resourced, leaving families like Amina and Ahmed’s with little support. Newly arrived families are given just 90 days of accommodation before they’re on their own.

At Ads-Up, we aim to fill the gap through emergency support, educational grants and advice, friendship and connection.

We encourage all donors to include a message of support. Our volunteers are working hard to make the family feel welcome, but the first months in the USA can be incredibly isolated and overwhelming.

Please contribute if you are able, every bit counts >>
